INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

Over the coming year The ACCR will be looking at undertaking an international expansion involving a partnership with the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Sudan. After hearing about the work of our dedicated team in the UK, both African Governments asked The ACCR and Freshwinds to work with them in the post-conflict rehabilitation of their nations.

The ACCR and Freshwinds will be looking at setting up a network of offices in the African Capitals which will be staffed by African-National volunteers and workers. Their work will involve encouraging co-operatives, working with other NGOs, raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and providing assistance and support through a number of clinics and mobile units.

The benefit of working directly with African-Nationals, and also utilising the in-country knowledge of expatriate Africans in the UK, means this venture is not just seen as Western aid. This avoids any friction between Western groups and the indigenous people, removing potential obstructions to their work in these regions.

An additional benefit is that it ensures that the planning and projects undertaken remain African-centric. It is not possible to just impose Western concepts on the Sudan and Congo. But instead, a complex understanding of - and sensitivity to - African culture and society is required in order to provide realistic solutions. The ACCR and Freshwinds both remain entirely non-political organisations. Its policy is simply to aid the healing of communal problems in both Africa and the West Midlands.

Possibly the greatest problem faced is that of funding which is essential for The ACCR and Freshwinds to be able to continue this charitable work. Although working in partnership with the governments of Congo and the Sudan, The ACCR and Freshwinds are receiving support rather than funding from this source.
